BIO

Dr. IHEANYICHUKWU GODFREY MBAGWU holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Zoology (with specialization in Fisheries & Hydrobiology) from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (1979), a Master’s degree in Fisheries Limnology from Bayero University, Kano (1989) and a doctorate degree in Fisheries Limnology from the same Bayero University, Kano (1995). He is exposed to many national and international training courses in Fisheries, Fisheries Limnology and related disciplines.


His working career started in 1983 as a Pupil Research Scientist at the National Institute for Freshwater Fisheries Research, (then Kainji Lake Research Institute) New Bussa, Niger State where he rose through the ranks to become a Director of Research and now the Acting Director/CEO of the Institute. Within these years, he underwent pupilage under seasoned scientists who were part of the FAO-UNDP researchers that established the Institute, worked on major research and development projects of the Institute and obtained all my higher degrees (Masters and Doctorate); carrying out my academic projects in areas that impacted directly on the mandate areas of the Institute.


He over the years originated and pioneered research in important aquaculture and environmental projects such as culture of plankton for fish hatchery operations, study and culture of Duckweed – an aquatic plant – as fish food; impacts of pollution on reservoir fisheries as well as in Kainji Lake flood forecasting. In these areas I generated a good number of applicable technologies, innovative & usable methodologies & new knowledge. He have over 80 publications in books, journals, conference proceedings, technical & annual reports and seminars to my credit.


He worked as pioneer staff in all the Institute’s premier outstations, gathering immense experience in the diversity of the people of our country as well as in regional fisheries and environmental situations of developmental importance. He have conducted many inhouse job-enhancing training courses for staff at NIFFR at different levels of appreciation for Junior, Senior & Management staff of Research, Technical and Administration departments in areas of Research Methods, Statistical Analysis of Research Data and Data Processing.


His hobbies are Reading (African Arts & Culture); Nature (Observing the wild); Watching Documentaries (Natural Science, Space Exploration; African Emancipation).
